Prominent politicians who died in tragic accidents

New Delhi: Here is a list of some eminent Indian politicians who met with an untimely and unfortunate end. 3rd June 2014: Union Minister of NDA government and veteran leader of Maharashtra, Gopinath Munde died in a road accident in early hour of the morning. Apart from Gopinath Munde, there are other leaders too who faced catastrophes of different nature. 24th April 2014: Former MLA Shobha Negi Reddy met with a road accident in Kurnool district of Seemandhra (Andhra Pradesh). Her SUV turned over late into the night on 23rd April. She was returning from State Assembly election rally. She was severely injured and succumbed to her injuries in a hospital in Hyderabad. Shobha Negi met with this tragic fate two weeks before election results declared her as winner. 2nd November 2012: Former Union Minister and President of TDP, Yerram Naidu died in a road mishap in Srikakulam of Andhra Pradesh. His car came under an oil tanker. He was returning from a wedding ceremony in Visakhapatnam. He was critically injured, hence admitted promptly to Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences. He died of cardiac arrest. 30th April 2011: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu was killed April 30, 2011, when a helicopter carrying him and four other people from Tawang to Itanagar crashed in a deep forested area. Khandu's helicopter lost contact 20 minutes after it took off as it approached Sela Pass 13,000 feet above sea level. Bad weather is said to have added to complexity of the navigation in an area which is known to be challenging to pilots.26th April 2010: Politician and Member of 14th Lok Sabha V Radhakrishnan was buffeted by a truck while he was on his morning walk. This incident took place on 22nd April 2010 and he succumbed to the injuries on 26th April. 3rd September 2009: Former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and stalwart leader of Congress in AP, YSR Reddy died as his helicopter crashed in . Inclement weather had forced the helicopter off course. His chopper was found in Nallamala forest area in Andhra Pradesh. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy died when his Bell 430 helicopter crashed in a dense forest while flying to a village in Chitoor district on September 3, 2009.The helicopter carrying YSR, two of his staff and two pilots went missing in pouring rain over the Naxal and tiger-infested Nalamalla forests. The then CM left Hyderabad on a six-seater Bell chopper at 8.35am accompanied by his secretary and chief security officer. After 9.27am, radio contact was lost with the helicopter.His body was traced 27 hours after the helicopter went missing.30th June 2007: Late Sahib Singh Verma, senior BJP leader and former CM of Delhi's car dashed into a truck on Jaipur - Delhi highway. He died on the spot. 31st March 2005: O P Jindal, The Then Haryana Power Minister and a noted industrialist, and state agriculture minister Surendra Singh were killed when the chopper carrying them developed a technical snag and went down near Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh on March 31, 2005.3rd March 2002: Advocate and politican Ganti Mohana Chandra Balayogi aged 51 died in a helicopter crash in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. He was the first dalit Speaker of the 12th Lok Sahba. 30th September 2001: Madhav Rao Scindia, a popular Congress leader died in an air crash near Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh. 8 other passengers on the plane met with the same fate. He belonged to the royal Scindia Marathi clan. His father was the last reigning Maharaja of Gwalior, Maharaj Jiwaji Rao Scindia. 11th June 2000: Former Indian parliamentarian Rajesh Pilot died in a road accident near Jaipur. He was also a pilot in the Indian Air force. Rajiv Gandhi was extremely cordial with Rajesh Pilot.25th December 1994: 7th President of India, Gaini Zail Singh met with a road accident on 29th November 1994. He had been traveling to Anandpur Sahib in Punjab. That very year he died on 25th December in the hospital.23rd June 1980: Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's brother, Sanjay Gandhi died of head wounds in an air crash. His plane crashed near Safdarjung Airport in New Delhi. Sanjay Gandhi was flying the aircraft himself.
