Modi kurta: When comfort wear becomes a fashion trend setter

New Delhi: Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi has set a new trend for people not only in India but abroad as well. The kurta worn by Modi is a half sleeved, buttoned up standing collar or a full sleeved one with buttoned cuffs. His designer is Bipin Chauhan, the owner of clothing label- Jade Blue. Bipin Chauhan and his brother Jitendra have taken this new fashion trend overseas by labeling it as ‘Modi kurta'. However, this trend was started by the man himself and was finessed by his designers. It dates back to 1990s when Modi was an RSS pracharak. He used to cut the long sleeved kurtas to half sleeve as they were easy to carry in a bag and occupied less space. Moreover, they were easy to wash and iron as Modi had to do the household chores himself. The only difference being, he used to wear simple khadi fabrics earlier and now his wardrobe includes expensive fabrics like khadi silk, matka silk and linen. The Modi kurta is available in 20 colours and 12 styles being sold at all retail stores of Jade Blue. The stiff half-sleeve cotton 'kurta' with a tight-fitting 'churidar' with a lot of gathers at the bottom remains Modi's favourite and signature style. He also likes carrying a stole, even suits, jackets and T-shirts. Modi takes a lot of interest in his attire. He is particular about his clothes.
