Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has resigned from his post.
The Chief Minister has handed over his resignation to Maharashtra Governor C V Rao.
Chavan has resigned after his alliance partner NCP withdrew its support from his govt in the wake of their alliance falling apart ahead of October 15 assembly elections.
The 15-year-old alliance between Congress and NCP crumbled Thursday over serious differences on seat sharing formula between the two parties. NCP was insisting on equal share in seat sharing in addition. The party also wanted CM post to rotate between the two parties for a period of 2.5 years each.
Earlier in the day, the opposition BJP demanded imposition of president's rule in the state.
