New Delhi: Lalu Prasad's journey from a small village boy to emergency hero to Bihar CM and finally to Birsa Munda Jail in Ranchi is quite interesting.Lalu started off his political career as a student leader during 1975 emergency. He came across as a hero in the fight against Indira Gandhi's whimsical imposition of emergency in the country.Lalu was elected a member of the Lok Sabha in 1977 as a Janata party candidate. At the age of 29, he was one of its youngest members of Parliament.Lalu became Chief Minister of Bihar in 1990 but resigned in 1997 following his name figuring in multi-crore fodder scam. He handed over the reins of power to his wife Rabri Devi in 1997 who continued as Bihar CM from 1997 to 2005.In this period Lalu concentrated on national politics and held important portfolio like Railways during UPA I regime while the fodder case was being heard in special CBI court.On September 03, 2013, Lalu was convicted and on October 3, 2013, he was given 5 years jail term with Rs. 25 lakh fine.He is an absolute family man. Married to Rabri Devi for more than four decades, Lalu's affection for his family is noticeable. Together they have two sons Tej Pratap and Tejasvi and seven daughters - Misha Bharti, Rohini Acharya, Chanda, Ragini,Dhannu, Hema, Lakshmi. A really large and happy family, indeed. Lalu named his eldest daughter, Misa which was the acronym for Maintenance of Internal Security Act. the dreaded law during Emergency, when lakhs of people were thrown into jails without rhyme or reason. Lalu was one among them. He was in jail at the time of the birth of his daughter, hence, the name - Misa.Lalu's son Tejasvi Yadav is a medium–pace bowler representing Jharkhand in domestic cricket. He also became a part of the Indian Premier League by joining the Delhi Daredevils n the year 2012. After his career could not take a flight in cricket, he later decided to follow his father and stepped into politics.At Lalu's Parivartan Rally, held in May 2013, he launched his sons in the corridors of politics.Lalu's wife Rabri Devi has been an important part of Bihar's polity. Politics was never Rabri's cup of tea which made her election as the chief minister of Bihar the most unforeseen act in the history of Indian politics. Lalu, who was serving as the chief minister of Bihar, had to quit his position after his involvement in the fodder scam. His sudden resignation, because of a CBI probe and his imminent arrest, forced him to look for a dependable politician to hold the chief minister's seat, till he returned. Who else, but, his loyal wife Rabri Devi? She was anointed the chief minister of Bihar, a woman with negligible education, who could not read official files, and had to depend on advisers for each of her official actions.
