New Delhi: Gursharan Kaur, the significant other of our prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, is an impeccable exemplar of a flawless housemaker even when the house is the one located in the middle of a constellation of magnificent houses at Race Course, the heart of Delhi. Born to Chattar Singh Kohli and Sardarni Bhagwati Kaur in 1937, she belongs to a village called Dhakkam near Pakistan which at that time was a part of British India. She graduated from Government College for Women in Patiala.Leading a plain simple life, little had she known that her life was going to make a full 360 degree turn when she married Dr. Manmohan Singh in 1958. Ever since then she has been a powerful adjunct and support to her husband. She handled the PM's household very elegantly while Dr Singh was busy handling the affairs of the nation. With her elegant and graceful persona, Gursharan Kaur has always managed to maintain the image of a low profile public figure which makes her complement Dr Singh perfectly. Dr Singh in a press conference once stated that he has the advantage of getting counseled by two women whom he trusts the most. One is Congress president Sonia Gandhi and the other his better half, Gursharan Kaur. Not only has she been recognized in the Delhi Sikh Community for her Kirtan singing, she has also made significant appearances on All India Radio, Jalandhar. Her style statement is such that it just cannot be overlooked. Vogue magazine specially mentioned Kaur's natural exquisiteness and wrote that in the G-20 summit held in 2009, Kaur was the only first wife to have her natural hair (undyed) and she carried it attractively. The self effacement she carries all the time on her face comes to reality when one gets to know that she has still kept the Maruti 800 car safe and intact in which she drove to the market to buy groceries while living at Safardarjung Road when Dr Singh was not in power. Kaur has been an emblematic Indian housewife too. Kaur has never missed out on the fact that she has to take care of a diabetic husband and while Dr Singh was regaining his strength after an open heart surgery, she used to offer prayers at gurudwara everyday. She is an enthusiastic booklover and her love for books is pretty evident from the wide collection of books the PM's house holds. While Dr Singh was the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, she, like every Indian wife, would pack lunch for him which she still does. The kindness and warmth can be felt in her hospitality. When Singh has been busy handling the matters of the nation, Kaur has kept herself busy with various exhibitions and book launches.
