New Delhi: Karnataka government on Tuesday challenged in the Supreme Court the acquittal of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa by the state High Court in disproportionate assets case.

Earlier, the Karnataka Cabinet had accepted the advice of state special public prosecutor (SPP) BV Acharya and state Advocate General Ravivarma Kumar to appeal against the HC verdict acquitting Jayalalithaa.

The 67-year-old AIADMK chief took oath as CM of Tamil Nadu for the fifth time on May 24 after the single judge bench of Justice CR Kumaraswamy upheld her appeal, quashed all charges against her and set aside her conviction and four-year sentence a trial court here handed down to her on September 27, 2014.

The court had said that there was no evidence that while in office, Jayalalithaa had accumulated more than Rs 60 crore that could not be explained by her declared income.

The court also observed that her wealth had increased by about 10 per cent during her first term, which was permissible.
