New Delhi: Parliamentary Affairs minister M. Venkaiah Naidu Thursday said that the decision to sack Kamla Beniwal as Mizoram governor was taken in accordance with Constitution and there was "no politics in it".
"Action against Kamla Beniwal was taken in accordance with the Constitution and there is no politics in it," Naidu told reporters outside parliament.
He also added that there were "serious allegations" against Beniwal, due to which the government took action.
The Congress party, however, has termed the sacking of Kamla Beniwal an act of political vengeance.
Senior Congress leader and Rahul Gandhi confidant Madhusudan Mistry said that the government's action smacks of political revenge. Mistry demanded that the government should explain it's stand inside parliament as the session is going on.
Meanwhile, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has also clarified that the backing of Kamla Beniwal is completely in tune with constitution.
“It has been done in accordance with rules and with due approval of President," said Ravi Shankar Prasad.
NCP leader Sharad Pawar has termed the sacking of Beniwal as unfortunate and politically motivated.
“This is unfortunate and is basically a political move,” said Pawar.
The Narendra Modi government Wednesday sacked Kamla Beniwal as Mizoram's governor.
Beniwal, 87, who was earlier the governor of Gujarat, was shifted to Mizoram July 6.
Beniwal had a strained relationship with Modi when he was chief minister of Gujarat.
To justify its action, the government today showed papers related to Beniwal's dismissal to leaders of different political parties including those from Samajwadi party, BSP, TMC and Congress.
The Congress is finding in a dilemma on this issue as approval for Beniwal's sacking has been given by President Pranab Mukherjee.
Meanwhile, Dr Kamla Beniwal is likely to leave Mizoram for Jaipur tomorrow, Raj Bhavan sources told PTI today.
Beniwal, who was scheduled to visit Hmuifang Tourist Resort, about 50 km from here, cancelled her programme, sources said.
As she was leaving with a short notice, it would be impossible to organise the ceremonial farewell dinner for her, state Protocol department officials said.
“An official farewell function where she would be accorded a guard of honour would be organised at the Lengpui Airport the day she is leaving which would be attended by the acting Chief Minister R Lalzirliana (Home Minister) and senior officials,” the officials said.
