Mumbai, Jan 7: Senior Congress leader Gurudas Kamat today said a meeting of Mumbai Congress Executive Committee should be convened immediately to discuss the proposed alliance with NCP for Mumbai Corporation polls.
Kamat, who has opposed alliance with NCP, said he has requested Mumbai Congress President Kripashankar Singh to convene the MRCC executive to discuss in detail terms of the tie-up with Sharad Pawar's party for the next month's poll.
Besides Mumbai Congress office-bearers, all MPs, MLAs, Ministers from Mumbai, Corporators, DCC Presidents and the party's front organisation chiefs should be invited to the meeting to seek their opinion on the subject, he said.
The former Mumbai Congress chief said his letter to party President Sonia Gandhi yesterday on intra-party matters had been interpreted in many ways.
“But I would not like to comment on this issue and the content of the letter.” “However, to clear all misunderstanding inside and outside the party, I have requested Kripashankar Singh to immediately convene a meeting of MRCC Executive,” he said.
Without naming Deputy CM Ajit Pawar who has announced his party NCP will not tie up with Congress in Pune and Pimpri -Chinchwad Corporations, he said a lot of confusion prevails over certain “reported statements” of some NCP leaders.
These statements have caused tremendous agony and pain to the loyal Congress workers, who need to be informed about terms of engagement with NCP, the former Union Minister said.
There is no doubt an alliance of secular parties is important to keep corrupt and communal parties away from power in Mumbai civic body, but this cannot be at the cost of self-respect and on basis of “unjustified” demands, he said.
According to sources, in the letter, Kamat has opposed tie-up with NCP and said Congress should have ended alliance talks after Ajit's statement.
He has also questioned the NCP's demand for 65 seats in 227-member Mumbai civic body.
