Jab They Met: Hema Malini and Dharmendra

New Delhi: Veteran Bollywood actor turned politician Dharmendra is amongst those few lucky ones who has the ability to turn everything he touches into gold.He started his Bollywood career with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere and further built up an image of a romantic hero. He went on giving blockbuster hits one after the other. And it was during his shooting that he came across the Dream Girl, quite literally. It was on the sets of movie `Tum Haseen Main Jawan' that Hema and Dharmendra fell in love with each other.Dharmendra was already a married man and had fathered two sons, Sunny and Bobby. But his love knew no boundaries. In the meantime, Hema was also approached for marital alliances by actors Sanjeev Kumar and Jeetendra. But she showed no interest in any of the offers. Hema did not show any keen interest in Dharmendra either. Dharmendra's marital status was a big barrier for Hema.But destiny played its cards and both came together eventually. Dharmendra and Hema still had to face few more troubles before tying a knot and becoming one till eternity. Dharmendra's wife Prakash Kaur was in a complete denial mode towards giving Dharmendra a divorce. Also, Hema's family strictly prohibited Hema from tying a knot with an already married man. But their love was limitless. Dharmendra and Hema found a way out and converted to Islam to get married. Immediately after Hema's father passed away, the couple got married in 1980. The nikaah took place in secret and later marriage ceremonies took place according to Iyengar rituals. Even after spending more than three decades together, the couple still seems to be head over heels in love with each other.It was revealed in later years that during the shoot of blockbuster hit Sholay, Dharmendra used to bribe spot boys for disturbing the lights on the sets so that Hema had to stay for some more time due to retakes which could in turn give Dharmendra a little more time to spend with her. The couple together has two daughters, Esha and Ahana Deol.
