New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley today lashed out at the Congress for what he called "a grandstanding, a charade" by Rahul Gandhi publicly opposing the ordinance protecting convicted MPs, MLAs.

Speaking to reporters here, Jaitley said, "It appears to be a desperate damage control exercise. Last few days there has been national revulsion over this ordinance.

"One should understand, the Union Cabinet approved this twice, first as a bill and then as an ordinance. The Parliament session was extended by a day in order to get this bill passed, but due to our opposition, it was referred to Standing Committee.

"Now, after this highly belated realisation of what constitutes nonsense, then heads should roll about who did this nonsense. Governments can make mistakes, but the first family of Congress cannot make mistakes", Jaitley said wryly.

"The whole country is now waiting to see whether our Prime Minister has any amount of self-respect left.  Either he accepts the party line and withdraws this nonsense, or stand up for his government's self-respect", said Jaitley.
