Famous father-son duos of Indian politics

New Delhi: Dynastic politics is becoming more the norm than exceptions in the corridors of Indian polity. Indian politics has witnessed a large number of politicians who have reposed faith more in their offsprings than second-rung leaders while choosing their successors. Some father-son duos have created a durable buzz in Indian politics whereas some were not lucky enough to create a niche among the public.Let's have a look at some famous father and son pairs. Mulayam and Akhilesh A supportive father, Mulayam Singh has extended his encouragement to his young one, Akhilesh who has recently taken the charge of Mulayam's party and chief ministership of Uttar Pradesh state. Akhilesh, born to Mulayam and Malti Devi, is the only child and was given the best of education for which he was sent to Australia to pursue his higher education. After winning the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in 2012, Mulayam handed over the charge of governing the state to his son Akhilesh. Even in subsequent days Mulayam has extended his full assistance in times of need for the young Yadav. Lalu and Tejaswi Yadav In a country like India where hierarchical rule is the most sought after regime, Lalu too has his successor ready to climb the ladder. In his Privartan Rally held in May 2013 in Patna, Lalu announced the upcoming role of his sons. Tejaswi, the younger Yadav is a middle order batsman and is all set to be the next face of RJD and follow his family legacy in politics. Tejaswi is also a member of the Delhi Daredevils team in the Indian Premium League (IPL). Also, he plays for Delhi local cricket league. During 2010 Bihar Assembly elections Lalu announced at a party meeting about Tejaswi becoming his heir and presiding over his election campaign. Lalu formally announced Tejaswi's active participation in the assembly election campaigning for RJD-Lok Janshakti Party (LJP). Karunanidhi and MK Stalin The grand old man of Tamil Nadu politics, Muthuvel Karunanidhi, started his career as a script writer for Tamil films in the dusty studios of Chennai. Over the years, his clan grew as the DMK supremo married three women and they had their own children. The extensive size of Karunanidhi's family tree has helped dynasty rule in diverse phases in Tamil Nadu politics. His son Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin is his third child born to his second wife Dayalu. His political career began at an early age of 14 when he began taking part in election campaigns in 1967 and soon was appointed in the General Committee of DMK. He gained prominence after he was jailed under MISA for protesting against emergency. Rajiv and Rahul Gandhi Belonging to the first political family of India, Rajiv took over the command of governing the nation after his mother Indira Gandhi's assassination. Taking over as the Prime Minister in 1984, Rajiv became the youngest Prime Minister at the age of 40. Now, after almost two decades of his assassination it is time for his son Rahul to prove his mettle in politics and take the charge of the nation. He has already created a place for himself in the hearts of people living in constituencies like Amethi and Rae Bareli where the Gandhi family holds sway. Farooq and Omar Abdullah The first political family of Jammu and Kashmir, the Abdullah family has been ruling the state since 1975. Its reign began with Sheikh Abdullah taking the charge of the state as the Prime Minister of J&K in 1948. After the end of his tenure in 1953, Sheikh Abdullah soon took over as the chief minister of the state in 1975 and served for two years.The legacy of power was taken forward by his son Farooq Abdullah after he became the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir in 1982. Farooq took over as the chief minister after his father died in the year 1982.The scion of the Abdullah family, Omar became the 11th and the youngest chief minister of J&K after forming a coalition with Congress party in 2009.He took the charge of Jammu and Kashmir National Conference party from his father in 2002 with a motive of taking it to new heights.
