New Delhi, Jan 5: Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid today sought to justify party workers' protest in West Bengal against a move to rechristen a building in Kolkata named after Indira Gandhi saying they are emotionally attached to the late prime minister.

Recalling Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee's past association with his party, he said, “I don't think that Mamataji is stranger to how Congress people feel about Indiraji. I am sure that she shares those feelings.”

At the same time, he said he was not fully aware of the local politics involving the issue.

“What the compulsions are and what politics at the moment, the ground level politics in West Bengal, I cannot comment on... I am not fully aware of it,” Khurshid told reporters here.

His comments came a day after party MP Deepa Dasmunshi strongly reacted to Banerjee's attack on Congress in which the latter had alleged collusion between the party leaders and CPI-M in West Bengal.

A strain in Congress-Trinamool ties came to fore on the Lokpal issue in which Banerjee's party strongly opposed the bill's passage in the Rajya Sabha.

The Indira Bhavan renaming issue saw the differences between the two allies reaching a flashpoint even as the Congress has been maintaining that there was no rift.
