New Delhi: Congress leader Digvijay Singh today stoked a controversy by striking a divergent note from the party on government's decision to bring an ordinance on convicted lawmakers, saying it would have been better had there been a political consensus.

“...In such controversial matters, it is always better to bring about a political consensus rather than pushing through an ordinance,” Singh remarked as BJP mounted an attack on the government over the issue saying its decision to promulgate an ordinance on convicted MPs is an attempt to make “cheats, frauds, murderers” and the likes as lawmakers.

Singh's remarks came even as party spokespers Raj Babbar dismissed the oppposition criticism and said the ordinance is aimed at “protecting the dignity of the Constitution”.

He also denied individuals are being protected through the measure.

At the AICC briefing, Babbar denied suggestions that the ordinance was rushed through to protect some leaders belonging to Congress and supporting parties.
