Kolkata: A city court today sought a report from IG(prison) and ADG(prison) of the West Bengal correctional services department explaining how suspended Trinamool Congress MP Kunal Ghosh could make a suicide attempt in his cell yesterday.
Justice Aravind Mishra of City Sessions Court asked the report to be submitted on Monday after Ghosh's counsel Ayan Chakraborty filed a petition before him during the day.
The petition stated that despite the suicide threat which Ghosh, one of the accused in the Saradha scam, had given in court during a hearing on November 10, the Presidency correctional home authorities had failed to provide adequate security to him for which he was able to make the attempt.
The judge sought to know from the prison authorities what steps were taken to provide sufficient security to Ghosh to pre-empt any untoward incident taking place, particularly after the proclaimed threat.
On the visit of Ghosh's family members to the correctional home, the judge said it was upto the prison authorities to take the decision in this regard.
Ghosh, who was arrested about a year ago in connection with the multicrore rupees scam, had allegedly attempted suicide in his cell at Presidency Correctional Home on Thursday night and was rushed to the hospital in the early hours yesterday. He had allegedly consumed several sedative pills.
