New Delhi: The Congress today welcomed the removal of CBI Director Ranjit Sinha from the 2G case but found “confusing signals” in the Supreme Court directive, wondering how can the officer be left to look after other cases if he was not performing adequately.

“With regard to the Supreme Court directive, of course, it is welcome. In case, if the Supreme Court feels that the CBI Director was not acting independently, it's a welcome step,” party spokesperson Sandip Dikshit said.

He, further added, however, I am a little confused. If you believe that the CBI director was not performing adequately, then how come you trust him with other cases, and in case you find it is only an administrative issue, then the kind of comments were not warranted.”

“It's a very confusing signal from the Supreme Court.  Sometimes, we do find the Supreme Court's judgements very perplexing,” Dikshit said.

Another party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi, a noted lawyer, however, reacted cautiously to the order saying that he does not think many comments should come from a political party on matter like this when the Supreme Court had said something.

He also said that as far as investigations were concerned, they do not depend on Director A or B and they go on because of institutional continuity.

Singhvi also said that as far as image was concerned, certainly individual director's act and omission would hurt the CBI's image but that was for the individual director to consider.

Twelve days before his retirement, Sinha today suffered a major blow when the Supreme Court removed him from the 2G scam case, saying the allegations against him of protecting some accused appears to be “prima facie credible”.

The apex court, in an unprecedented order, handed over the case to the senior-most officer after Sinha in the 2G scam investigating team.

A bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu, however, refused to pass an elaborate order on the issue saying that it would “tarnish” the “image and reputation” of the premier agency.
