New Delhi: Recently a section of the Congress party went all out in support of the Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi. The Congress leadership preferred not to react to pro-Rahul voices. It has been over three days since the party secretaries met and wrote a letter to the veteran Congressmen in support of Rahul and demanded generational change in the party's leadership.
After Congress party's drubbing in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, dissent within the party has become an everyday affair concerning the party's leadership and the manner in which the elections were strategised.
Three days back the secretaries of the party wrote a letter to CWC and all the senior members of the party citing need for generational change and Rahul Gandhi's need to be more active in the party.
There was no word from the high command for over three days after a group of AICC secretaries publicly slammed senior leaders for criticising Rahul Gandhi.
Some say the pro-Rahul statements were stage-managed. Rahul Gandhi himself appeared indulgent when he described the protest by his loyalists in terms of “multiple voices” and that the issue “would be resolved”.
Some Congress supporters are pleased about such developments. “Now, everybody realizes that Rahul should not be taken for granted. And that is important,” said an AICC office-bearer.
A leader warned that if a healthy compromise is not reached, “vigilantism” in the name of defending Rahul can spiral out of control.
AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh expressed happiness at the secretaries' decision and said that he too wanted to see some generational change.
