New Delhi, Jan 7: The Congress party is galvanizing the party machinery to face the challenge in 2014 general elections but the state level leadership is in tatters in many states.

The party revamp is expected to top the agenda of the party's two-day chintan shivir at Jaipur slated to begin from January 18. It will be followed by a day-long AICC session.

PCC chiefs of six states are yet to be appointed by the party leadership. The six states are - Bihar, Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Gujarat. The PCC presidents of these states had resigned under different circumstances owing to disproportionate assets case.

There are states in which the performance of the incumbent PCC chief is not up to the mark and they are also on the firing line. These states are Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Orissa, West Bengal and Rajasthan.

Apart from these states, the party is grappling with the challenge of replacing the PCC chiefs in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Orissa, West Bengal and Rajasthan, where the performance of the incumbents is below expectation.

The party had accepted the resignation of Rita Bahuguna as UP PCC chief recently. Lok Sabha MP Nirmal Khatri has been made UPCC chief a few months ago.

The party has to take a decision on the future of three former cabinet ministers who are yet to be assigned responsibilities after their resignation from union council of ministers. These leaders are - SM Krishna, Ambika Soni and Mukul Wasnik.

In case of Madhya Pradesh, the party made Kantilal Bhuria the PCC chief to check the infighting but it has failed to work.

Obviously, the party needs to put its house in order if they have are looking to repeat their performance of 2009 in 2014.
