NEW DELHI: Congress on Sunday trained its guns on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Lalit Modi issue, saying it was in his own interest to take "immediate action" against people involved in corruption.

Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad told media that the prime minister should take action before the people of India start asking for his resignation, which they have not so far.

"It is in the interest of the prime minister that he takes immediate action against those who are involved in corruption. Otherwise, this particular incident will haunt him across the globe. He cannot escape," Azad said.

"Should he keep silent, time will come when people will start to ask for his resignation."

Azad recalled the prime minister promised the first thing he would do when he came to power would be to bring back black money stashed in banks abroad but did not even write a letter to bring Lalit Modi back to India.

"The citizens of the country are asking what actions have been taken against the foreign minister or the Rajasthan chief minister. Every hour, there is new evidence against the Rajasthan chief minister," Azad said.
