New Delhi: Congress today accused BJP MP from East Delhi constituency Maheish Girri of violating the Model Code of Conduct by laying the foundation stone of two schools in south-east Delhi district.

Congress said that since Election Commission announced the date of by-elections to three Assembly seats - Mehrauli, Krishna Nagar and Tughlakabad, following which model code of conduct came into force immediately in districts pertaining to constituencies.

“BJP's East Delhi MP Maheish Girri today laid foundation stone of two schools – situated in Phase-II and Phase-III in Madanpur Khadar in south east Delhi, which is a clear violation of the model code of conduct. Congress has registered a complaint against Girri to Delhi chief electoral officer,” DPCC president Arvinder Singh said told reporters here.

Congress has threatened if election commission fails to take action against the BJP MP, they would launch protests against the saffron party in the national capital.

“How can a BJP MP lay foundation stone of any institution despite the fact that when model code of conduct is in place.

If state election commission doesn't take strict action against Girri within next 48 hours, a delegation of party leaders will meet Election Commission of India and party would also launch a series of protest if needed,” Singh said.

Congress leader Haroon Yusuf accused Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung of not meeting Congress leaders, who went to meet him to put up the matter before him.

“We went to meet L-G to bring to his notice the violation of model code of conduct by BJP MP, but he didn't give us time to meet, which is unfortunate. L-G is the Constitutional post and he should have intervened in the matter taken up by us,” Yusuf said.

Reiterating its allegations against the BJP, Congress said that saffron party was “running away” from the fresh elections in the national capital.

“We have been saying for long days that BJP is running away from the elections in Delhi. No work has been done in the area of electricity, water in the last one year,” Singh added.

The by-elections to three Assembly seats - Mehrauli, Krishna Nagar and Tughlakabad would be held on November 25.

The seats fell vacant after Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma, Harsh Vardhan and Ramesh Bidhuri got elected to the Lok Sabha.
