Congress on Monday  said the Centre should keep an "eagle's eye" on recent incidents of violence in Ludhiana, terming them unfortunate and painful.

The issue of violence over a congregation of a religious sect there also found echo in the Lok Sabha with members of Congress and Akali Dal clashing and forcing adjournment of the House for a brief period.

"There is a need for the Centre to keep an eagle's eye on the developments in Punjab given the past history of terrorism. Since 2007 when SAD-BJP government came to power, such incidents have repeatedly happened, which have affected the social cohesion," party spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters at the AICC briefing here.

Tewari said the Centre has already sent paramilitary forces as requested by the state to control the situation.

"Incidents that took place in Ludhiana in last three days were unfortunate and painful," he said adding that there are information that elements, which had earlier broken the peace of the state are now fanning such things. PTI
