Belda (West Bengal), Jan 17: Asserting that despite a financial crisis, her government fulfilled its promises, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday said but for her, the debt-ridden government would have gone to auction.

"Due to the 34 years of Left Front legacy, we have to pay more than we earn. Despite the poor financial situation, we have delivered whatever we had promised.

"It is only because of me that the government is running. Otherwise, it would have gone to auction," Banerjee said in this town in West Midnapore district.

Addressing a public rally here, some 170 km from Kolkata, she announced a host of projects and schemes for the district.

"Along with seven new colleges, an industrial training institute will be set up in each block. Besides, all subdivisions will get a polytechnic college, a kisan mandi, a cold storage and food godowns," said Banerjee.

She said all the projects announced by her government in the district were either nearing completion or the work was on in full swing.

While she kept on showering sops and claiming the "good work" done by her government, she also affirmed that this was not being done with the panchayat polls in mind.

"I have visited West Midnapore around 10 times. I do not come here asking for votes. I'm here to work for you. I'm here to ensure your welfare. Even today, I have not come for seeking your votes, but for your welfare," she said.

She attributed all the malice that the state was suffering from to the Left Front rule and claimed that only in a short span of time, her government had achieved "99 percent" of what was promised.

"We have done whatever we have promised. Check our party manifesto and compare with the actual work. We have done 99 percent of the work," she said.

Banerjee said Rs.4,500 crore would be invested in Vidyasagar Industrial Park and Rs.3,5000 crore in Salboni Industrial Park in the district. She also announced setting up of more manufacturing-cum-industrial parks and industrial clusters in the district.

Stating that she was not used to "playing to the gallery", the chief minister assured the people that once the financial condition of her government improved, all their problems would be taken care of.
