Patna, June 24: BJP president Rajnath Singh Sunday cautioned Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his Janata Dal-United (JD-U) against the Congress.
"Congress se bachkar rahiyega (Beware of Congress)," Rajnath Singh warned Nitish Kumar without naming him during his address at a meeting of his party's workers here.
"You have made a mistake by joining hands with the Congress," he claimed, adding that in the past, any party that went with the Congress lost its identity and support base.
"It is a dangerous step to go with the Congress. But JD-U has joined hands with it," he said.
Stressing that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was not in favour of ending its 17-year-old alliance with the JD-U, he said: "We failed to understand what happened to JD-U that ended the alliance."
Rajnath Singh said that BJP's "crime" was to appoint Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as party campaign committee head. "How has Modi become an issue suddenly? Why he was not an issue from 2002 to 2013," he asked.
Contrary to expectations, the BJP chief did not attack Nitish Kumar directly for ending the alliance.
Unlike most of the BJP leaders, including Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Ravi Shankar Prasad, and Shahnawaz Husain, who attacked Nitish Kumar for ending the alliance, Rajnath Singh did not take the name of the Bihar chief minister even once during his address.
He appealed to the workers to help the party win all 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar in the next general polls to ensure a BJP government at the centre.
