Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said both the AGP and BJP were opposing the land ratification agreement with Bangladesh with an eye on the coming Lok Sabha elections.

“The AGP and the BJP are merely opposing the land transfer agreement just for the sake of opposition and to mislead the people without going into the hard facts,” the Chief Minister said in a statement here.

The land transfer agreement would pave the way for transfer sizeable chunk of land under adverse possession of Bangladesh to Assam.

“Of the total 665 acres under adverse possession of Bangladesh, Assam will regain 397.5 acres while Bangladesh will get possession of 267.5 acres. The moot question is how can Assam lose out a single inch of land to Bangladesh as made out to by AGP and BJP? It's all a misinformation campaign unleashed by both the parties,” he said.

Gogoi alleged none of these parties did anything worthwhile on this front while they were in power, both in the state and at Centre.

The land swap agreement would ensure demarcation and erection of fencing in the unfenced 2.86 km stretch in Lathitilla-Dumabari sector along the Indo-Bangla border.

“The agreement would help to solve the long pending boundary issues with Bangladesh once and for all. It would also help in opening up the frontiers leading to rise in volume of trade and commerce,” said Gogoi He appealed to all  parties to extend their support for the smooth passage of the land transfer bill in the current winter session of Parliament.
