New Delhi: Demanding a crackdown on Amit Shah for his “objectionable remarks” on revenge in riot-hit Uttar Pradesh, AAP today asked the Election Commission to register a case against the former Gujarat minister for spreading communal hatred.

“The EC should not allow such elements to create hatred at such a sensitive juncture, when the country is in midst of general elections. The remarks openly incite people of one community to take revenge against another religious community and annot be allowed to go unpunished.

“It should immediately order registration of a criminal case against the BJP's national general secretary Amit Shah for his inflammatory remarks aimed at spreading communal hatred,” AAP said in statment.

Shah, a former minister of state in Gujarat, had said in a public gathering that election in Uttar Pradesh, especially in western Uttar Pradesh, is an election for honour, for seeking revenge for the insult, and for teaching a lesson to those who committed injustice.

AAP said that the BJP leader's utterances, which have not been denied either by him or his party so far, clearly constitute a criminal offence under Section 153 of the Indian Penal Code, and should be booked without any delay for vitiating the “communal harmony” before elections.

“These remarks are also a clear violation of the Election Commission's Model Code of Conduct,” the statement said. It also accused other BJP leaders of trying to stoke communal passions through their utterances.

“Only recently, its Delhi election campaign incharge, VK Malhotra had named specific areas of the capital and allegedly termed those as terror hubs. “The AAP demands a severe crackdown on such elements who are trying to take advantage of the election period to further their nefarious designs,” the statement added.
