Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) candidate for the byelection to the RK Nagar assembly seat Gangai Amaran today met Kollywood superstar Rajinikanth here, triggering debate on social media that the actor could soon join the saffron party.
During the brief meeting, Rajinikanth wished Gangai Amaran success in his political innings, the latter's son Venkat Prabhu said in a tweet.
"Today our thalaivar @superstarrajini met and wished my dad for his political victory in #RKNagarByElection #happyson #GangaiAmaran," Prabhu's tweet said.
He also posted a picture of his father with Rajinikanth at the latter's residence.
Amaran, a music composer, had joined the BJP in 2014. He is pitted against ruling AIADMK’s TTV Dinakaran and opposition DMK’s N Maruthu Ganesh.
Amaran has already hit the campaign trail here, openly alleging that jailed AIADMK interim general secretary VK Sasikala had 'arm twisted' him into parting with his property in the city outskirts in 1994 during the first regime of Jayalalithaa.
The music director had also lauded AIADMK rebel leader O Panneerselvam for his defiance of Sasikala.
RK Nagar assembly seat will go to polls on April 12. The byelection at this seat was necessitated after it fell vacant following the demise of incumbent MLA and AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa.
Meanwhile, microblogging site twitter has been flooded with tweets that Rajinikanth will soon join the BJP.
