Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi was today granted bail by a Bhiwandi court today in connection with a defamation case filed by an RSS functionary for blaming the Hindutva organisation for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.
He was granted bail on a personal surety by Congress leader Shivraj Patil. The court has now fixed January 28 as the next date of hearing. Congress leaders Milind Deora and Gurudas Kamat were among the several present in the court room for the hearing.
Addressing a group of party workers after he was granted bail, Rahul said that his fight is against the people who want to stifle individual freedom and liberties of Indians.
“I have come to the court to fight for Gandhiji's ideology. On one hand is an ideology of freedom and on other is ideology that wants slavery. Those I am fighting against want to India to be pulled down so they can rule country,” Rahul said.
The case goes back to March 2014 when Rahul, in an election speech in Maharashtra’s Bhiwandi, had alleged that “RSS killed Gandhiji.”
"RSS people killed Gandhiji, and today their people talk of him. They are opposed to Sardar Patel and Gandhiji," he had said, while addressing an election rally.
RSS activist Rajesh Kunte had later filed a defamation case against Gandhi scion.
