The Congress Working Committee members on Monday requested their vice-president Rahul Gandhi to take charge as president of the party.
Senior party leader A K Antony, who was present at the CWC meeting in New Delhi on Monday, said that the time was right for Rahul to take over as president.
“CWC was of view that Rahul Gandhi must take over presidency for Congress party,” said AK Antony.
“It was the first time that this sentiment was strongly and unanimously expressed. Final decision has to be that of the President,” Antony said, adding “It's high time that Congress must mobilise all its forces to fight against the dictatorial rule of Modi government.”
Meanwhile, current party president Sonia Gandhi skipped the CWC meeting today as she was feeling unwell. Rahul chaired the meeting in her absence for the first time.
During the CWC, Rahul attacked Narendra Modi’s government at the Centre, saying the democracy under the present dispensation was going through one of its "darkest hours".
"Democracy under the present dispensation is going through one of its darkest hours. All attempts by this government to suppress our fundamental freedoms by abusing state power will only strengthen our resolve to defeat such dangerous designs," Gandhi said.
