New Delhi: The ruling Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh and Ajit Singh-led Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) may come together to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in the upcoming state assembly polls.
The news about the possibility of an alliance between the two parties ahead of assembly polls is doing rounds from sometime. And it was fuelled yesterday when Ajit Singh met Samajwadi chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, hours after latter’s brother Shivpal Singh Yadav had called on the RLD chief.
There was, however, no official statement on the outcome of the meeting but reports suggest that the leaders discussed the seat-sharing formula for the assembly polls to be held next year. Shivpal Yadav, later speaking to media described the meeting as customary.
“I have no such information on discussion on the alliance. Discussion will be held at the level of netaji (Mulayam) and he has to take a final decision,” Samajwadi spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said.
Reports also suggest that Singh wants a Rajya Sabha berth and Samajwadi Party may withdraw a candidate for Upper House to accommodate Singh.
The ruling Samajwadi Party is also keen on a tie-up to attract Jat voters of western Uttar Pradesh to counter the BJP, which in 2014 general elections had snatched from the RLD.
The RLD was part of Mulayam's previous government between 2004 and 2007 but the two parties have never had a pre-poll tie-up.
