The Rajya Sabha was adjourned briefly today following an uproar shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi entered the House.

As soon as the Prime Minister entered, Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad sought an apology from him for having projected the opposition as ‘supporters of black money’.

Azad was supported by Trinamool Congress's Derek O'Brien. Immediately after this, the Chair adjourned the proceedings till 2pm.

In the Lok Sabha, the TMC and the Congress raised the issue of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee’s IndiGo flight which was made to hover for more than 30 minutes with low fuel near Kolkata. The TMC claimed that it was a conspiracy to kill her.

Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju refuted the allegations and said that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation had ordered an inquiry into the incident.

“Wrong to say the IndiGo flight was made to hover for 30-40 minutes. DGCA has ordered an inquiry to check how three flights to Kolkata reported low fuel,” Raju said in Lok Sabha.

The Speaker was later forced to adjourn the House for the day due to unabated opposition protests over demonetisation.

Speaking to reporters outside the Parliament, several Congress leaders said that they also wanted to raise the issue of vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s Twitter account hacking but the latter said that ‘Parliament is not the right place for this issue’.

The Parliament has failed to transact any business in the ongoing Winter Session due to continuous uproar by the opposition parties over government’s November 8 decision to demonetise high-value currency notes.
