Putting an end to the speculations regarding cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu following his exit from the Bharatiya Janata Party, his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu today said that he will contest the Punjab Assembly polls on a Congress ticket.

She said that Sidhu, who had relinquished his Rajya Sabha seat as a nominated member from the BJP last year, will enter the poll fray from the Amritsar East Assembly constituency.

Navjot added that her husband always wanted to work for the betterment of Punjab.

Speculations were rife that Sidhu can contest from Amritsar East seat -- the one currently held by his wife Navjot, who joined the Congress last month.

She had in past dropped ample hints that her husband will contest the upcoming state polls on the Congress’ ticket and will join the party soon.

"Sidhu will follow me and very soon he will join the Congress," she had said.

Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh had said that it was for the Sidhu couple to decide who will contest on Congress ticket from Amritsar.

"The one-family-one-ticket norm will be strictly adhered to in all cases. I will be meeting Navjot Singh Sidhu soon to work out the modalities of his joining the party. Sidhu met Rahul Gandhi since he had not had a meeting with him on his joining earlier," he had said ruling out the possibility of both getting party tickets.

According to reports, Sidhu is believed to address nearly 70 political rallies in support of the Congress.

Punjab will go to polls on February 4 whereas counting of votes will be done on March 11.
