Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu has once again kept the Congress party and political pandits guessing about his action plan.
Yesterday, reports were rife that Sidhu will join the Congress party in presence of party vice-president Rahul Gandhi but that did not happen.
Sidhu, who quit the BJP last year and kept the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) hanging for weeks, had even indicated that he will join the Congress on January 9 but then the plan changed.
According to reports, Sidhu wanted to join the Congress in the presence of party vice-president Rahul Gandhi but since he was out of country, he decided to wait. Yesterday, Hindustan Times reported, soon after Rahul’s return from his foreign trip, Congress leaders tried to contact Sidhu but couldn’t reach him.
In the evening, his camp indicated that Sidhu, elected thrice from Amritsar Lok Sabha seat on BJP ticket, will now join the Congress on the auspicious day of Lohri, which falls on January 13.
The BJP has now said that the 53-year-old has completely lost direction in politics, as signified by his 'party-hopping' decisions. Even the party’s Amritsar unit leaders were curious to know if there was any probability of a split in the event of Sidhu joining the Congress.
"Like I said earlier also unfortunately Navjot Singh Sidhu, who had such a high reputation for the reason best known to him has lost direction in the politics. He started hopping from one party to another and now desperately clinging to Congress party," senior BJP leaders S Prakash said.
The latest development comes in backdrop of Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh’s confirmation last week that Sidhu will contest the upcoming polls from Amritsar East constituency, the seat owned by his wife Navjot Kaur, who had in November last year quit the BJP and joined the Congress.
In Punjab, the Congress has been out of power for 10 years. The state will go to polls on February 4. Counting of votes will take place on March 11.
