In an apparent racist attack, an Indian student was brutally assaulted on a tram in Poland. Initially, it was believed that the victim had died, but External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj informed that he has survived the attack.
According to news agency PTI, Swaraj spoke to Indian ambassador to Poland Ajay Bisaria regarding the attack on the student in Poznan city. She later updated that the student has survived the attack.
The government, she said, was enquiring into all aspects of the incident.
"There was an incident of beating. Fortunately, he has survived. We are inquiring into all aspects of the incident," Swaraj tweeted.
"I have just spoken to the Indian Ambassador in Poland and asked for a report. @IndiaPoland" her another tweet reads.
The Indian envoy also confirmed that the student has survived the attack and was in ICU for treatment of his injuries.
"Prelim enquiry suggests student attacked in Poznan tram on Wednesday. Thank God, he survived. Getting details," the envoy tweeted.
Describing the incident as a 'racist issue' similar to the US, Agnihotri tweeted, "Racist issue similar to USA, the person shouted at him and then start hitting.”
This incident comes nearly a month after an Indian engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla was shot dead in a racially motivated incident in US’ Kansas City.
