New Delhi: The Congress has slammed the Centre over reports of megastar Amitabh Bachchan hosting the government’s mega-event event in the national capital to celebrate the completion of two years of the Narendra Modi-led government in power, saying that the actor is under cloud for investigations into the Panama Papers leak.
"We have no objection if the Prime Minister participates in any sort of a programme with Amitabh Bachchan," said Randeep Surjewala, Congress spokesperson.
"But there is one thing to keep in mind. When there is an investigation into an individual for black money, and the PM takes part in a programme hosted by that individual, what sort of a message does it send to the investigation agencies? There is a need to keep this in mind," he added.
However, much to the embarrassment of the Congress, Bachchan said in a statement to a television channel that it was actor R Madhavan who has been roped in as the host for the upcoming event and not him.
Bachchan said that he would only be hosting a small segment of a programme based on the 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' scheme as he was its brand ambassador.
"I don't think they (Congress) are aware that I am not hosting the event. I have been invited as the brand ambassador of the 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' campaign. It is up to the government to decide whether to have me there or not," Big B told the channel.
The programme to celebrate NDA’s two-year anniversary is scheduled for May 28 at the India Gate, New Delhi.
Many prominent faces from the film industry are expected to grace the event.
