Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Amit Shah on Friday launched a stinging attack on Congress president Rahul Gandhi over the Supreme Court's decision to extend the house arrest of five rights activists detained in connection with Bhima-Koregaon violence case.
Amit Shah referred to an old tweet by his Congress counterpart to take aim at the main Opposition party while accusing it of defaming 'honest' people.
"There is only one place for idiocy and it's called the Congress. Support ‘Bharat Ke Tukde Tukde Gang’, Maoists, fake activists and corrupt elements. Defame all those who are honest and working. Welcome to Rahul Gandhi’s Congress," Amit Shah said in a series of tweets.
"India is a vibrant democracy with a healthy culture of debate, discussion and dissent. However, plotting against the country with the intent to harm our citizens is not one of these. Those who politicised this issue need to apologise," he added.
Demanding an apology from the Congress, he said the party must clear its stand over 'urban Naxalism'.
"Those who stooped down to the level of polticising an issue of national security have been exposed by the Honourable Supreme Court's decision today. It is high time that the Congress now clears it's stand on this critical issue of Urban Naxalism," Amit Shah said.
Amit Shah's remark came after the Supreme Court refused to interfere with the arrest of five rights activists by the Maharashtra Police in connection with the Koregaon-Bhima violence case and declined to appoint a SIT to probe their arrest.
The top court said that the activists were "arrested for Maoist links, not dissent".
A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, in a 2:1 verdict, refused the plea seeking the immediate release of the activists.
The bench also extended by four weeks the house arrest of the activists. The five activists - Varavara Rao, Arun Ferreira, Vernon Gonsalves, Sudha Bharadwaj and Gautam Navlakha - are under arrest at their homes since August 29
