Innova Crysta vs XUV500: Which One to Pick?

  • With the Innova Crysta, Toyota addressed the core issues that plagued the older Innova. The new-generation is not only far better equipped, but is also more powerful and luxurious. How does it stack up against Mahindra's flagship crossover, the XUV500 Let's take a look

  • Both cars have unique body types. While the Innova Crysta is a subtly designed MPV that blends in the crowd, the XUV500 with its aggressive design makes sure it stands out. We like certain understated elements on the Toyota, such as the chrome on the wing mirrors, smoked out projector headlights with LED daytime running lamps, and the sabretooth-like tail lights. On the other hand, bits like the flared wheel arches, gloss black grille and the S-shaped light guide in the headlamps, make the Mahindra grab attention.

  • The Innova continues to sell with a 7-seater as well as an 8-seater configuration. The XUV500 meanwhile, is available as a 7-seater only. The cabin of the Innova Crysta is more accommodating, providing better legroom and headroom to the occupants. The MPV trumps its rival when it comes to overall space, across three rows.

  • The XUV500 gets Mahindra's 2.2-litre mHawk motor (1.99-litre for Delhi), that generates 140bhp of power and 330Nm of torque, paired to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. One can choose a front-wheel drive setup or an all-wheel drive variant as well. With the Crysta, Toyota debuted two new diesel engines — a 2.4-litre and a 2.8-litre unit. Power figures stand at 150PS / 343Nm and 174PS / 360 Nm for the two engines respectively. While the smaller engine is available only with a 5-speed manual, the latter can be had only with a 6-speed automatic.

  • Prices for the Mahindra range between Rs. 12.0 lakh - 17.8 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai). The Crysta starts at Rs. 13.84 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs. 20.78 lakh. One will have to shell out an extra Rs. 3.5 lakh for the top variant of the manual Innova Crysta compared to the XUV500. For the automatic top-variant, the Toyota is expensive by nearly Rs. 4 lakh.

  • The Toyota is significantly more expensive compared to the Mahindra. For the extra price, one does get more powerful engines, better quality of interiors and Toyota's famed reliability.
