10 successful tech tycoons who made it big without a college degree

  • Today the top priority for children and students is education. But there are a lot of tech entrepreneurs who gave us an example that you don’t always need a degree from a renowned college to become a millionaire. Although education is very important, here are 10 tech heads who are doing extraordinarily well without a degree.

  • Steve Jobs – Apple: Steve Jobs was the co-founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Apple. He dropped out of college after one semester and recycled cans and bottles for daily needs. He was the creator of iPod and then the iPhones. He lost his life battle to cancer.

  • Mark Zuckerberg – Facebook: Mark Zuckerberg founded the second highest traffic website in the world, Facebook. The billionaire dropped out of college at the age of 20 to complete the work he started to create the social network. His net worth is estimated to be USD 46 billion (approximately Rs. 31 lakh crore) as of December 2015.

  • Jan Koum – WhatsApp: He is the CEO and co-founder of WhatsApp and made USD 6.8 billion (approximately Rs. 45 lakh crore) when Facebook acquired his mobile messaging startup for USD 19 billion (approximately Rs 1.2 lakh crore). He dropped out of school and joined Yahoo, where he managed security and infrastructure for the company.

  • Evan Williams – Twitter: Williams is one of the co-founders of Twitter, founder of Square, and before these he also co-founded the successful podcasting company Odeo. He left his studies when he was just 20 and then worked hard to make billions of dollars.

  • Michael Dell – Dell: Michael Dell left college at the age of 19 and the started Dell one of the world’s leading sellers of personal computers (PCs). He was also ranked as the 41st richest person in the world on 2012 Forbes list of billionaires.

  • Bill Gates – Microsoft: Gates attended Harvard in 1973 and dropped out of college in just two years and founded Microsoft with childhood friend Paul Allen. Years later in 2007, he ended up receiving an honorary degree from Harvard itself.

  • Larry Ellison – Oracle: Larry Ellison is a serial entrepreneur, programmer and philanthropist who is the executive chairman and chief technology officer of Oracle Corporation. Ellison left the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign after his second year for family reasons. Post that he attended the University of Chicago for one term, where he first encountered computer design and then worked hard towards building Oracle.

  • Travis Kalanick – Uber: Travis who dropped out of college at the age of 21 is the person behind Uber, which is not just a concept available in USA. Countries like India and Australia also have Uber and people do not call for a taxi or cab now but call for an Uber, one of the the transportation network companies.

  • Gabe Newell- Valve: Newell is the co-founder and managing director of video game development and digital distribution company Valve. Like Zuckerberg and Gates, he is also a Harvard dropout.

  • Larry Page- Google: Larry page is an American computer scientist and Internet entrepreneur who co-founded Google. He graduated from University of Michigan but later dropped out of his PhD. program which has brought him to this list.
