A heart-warming visual emerged from Manipur, which is reeling with a flood, after Assam Rifles personnel rescued a local individual on Saturday, who in turn expressed gratitude to the officials by singing a traditional song. The video shows a man singing the song while the personnel rowing the lifeboat in flooded waters. Earlier on July 2, the Assam Rifles launched Operation Jal Raahat in Imphal to prevent flooding as part of which, a Flood Control Room has been activated with helpline number 7075578116.

Rivers breached embankments

Notably, the incessant rainfalls have flooded parts of Manipur including, the Imphal West and Imphal East districts. The flood conditions were developed after two major rivers breached embankments, prompting the mass evacuation of people. Over 2,000 people have been evacuated so far while at least two people lost their lives after they drowned in the Senapati River in the Senapati district.

According to a senior official, the Imphal River has breached its embankment at Singjamei Oinam Thingel in Imphal West while the Kongba River breached embankments at Kongba Irong and parts of Keirao in Imphal East. The Iril River has also overflowed at Sawombung and parts of Ksheteigao in Imphal East. The government has set up at least 20 relief camps, 10 each in Imphal East and Imphal West districts.

Working on permanent solution for floods: CM N Biren Singh

On July 5, Manipur CM N Biren Singh visited the flood-affected areas and took stock of preparation to tackle unprecedented natural disasters and said that his government is working on a comprehensive plan to find a permanent solution to the floods. He said, "This is a natural disaster. We hadn't expected such heavy rains. It is happening in many parts of India. Manipur received heavy rains in various areas and unfortunately in the Senapati district, two people lost their lives. Even the Ukhrul district is also flooded. So, I was discussing with the Water Resources Minister that we have to make a comprehensive plan, a detailed report project for the future so that we can find a permanent solution for the future."
