Assam woke up to a mild earthquake on Sunday morning, which measured 4.2 on the Richter scale. The tremors of the quake were felt in different areas of the state, including Arunachal Pradesh and neighbouring country Bhutan.
As per the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the tremor's epicentre was located near Udalguri district with accurate location at Latitude 26.73 N and Longitude 92.31 E in Assam. It had a depth of 15 km. A NCS report said the quake was recorded at 7:47 am in Udalguri district on the northern bank of Brahmaputra. The exact location of the epicentre of the earthquake is around 105 km north of Guwahati and 48 km west of Tezpur, near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.
In the Northeast, the tremors were felt in multiple areas including, Tawang (Arunachal Pradesh), Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh), Jorhat, Tezpur, Golaghat, Guwahati, Nagaon, Dhekiajuli, Barpeta, Goalpara, North Lakhimpur and Dimapur (Nagaland).
There is no immediate report of any injury to anyone or damage to any property. The Northeastern region falls in the high seismic zone, making earthquakes frequently hit the region.
Earlier on October 9, a mild earthquake of magnitude 3.3 shook Bhutan. The tremor had a depth of 5 km. The epicentre of the earthquake was located at 27.11 N latitude and 89.13 E longitude.
