In a significant move, the Assam government has renamed Karimganj district as ‘Sri Bhoomi.’ Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision following a Cabinet meeting. This renaming follows a series of similar changes to village names in the state.

District renaming inspired by Tagore

The decision taken at the state cabinet meeting honours Rabindranath Tagore, who a century ago described the area as “Sribhumi” and called it “land of Maa Lakshmi.” Sarma said the name change reflects the wishes of the community and is part of a broader effort to replace names that have no historical or linguistic significance.

"Over 100 years ago, Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore had described modern-day Karimganj district as Sribhumi - the land of Maa Lakshmi. Today, the Assam cabinet has fulfilled this long-standing demand of our people," he said.

"We will continue to change names that do not have any dictionary reference or any other historical evidence. We have been doing this for a long time and it is a continuous process," the CM said.

The Cabinet also agreed to publish the electoral rolls for the panchayat elections by December, aiming to conclude the polls by February 10, 2025.

Assam to host Global Investment Summit

In another landmark move, the State Cabinet approved the plan to hold an Investment and Infrastructure Summit on February 24, 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited and accepted the request to attend. To attract stakeholders, the Assam government will organise roadshows in Indian cities and abroad in the coming months.

"The cabinet approved holding an investment and infrastructure summit in Assam on February 24, 2025. We have invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has accepted our request," he said.
