A state-run medical college in Assam withdrew its advisory asking female doctors, students and all healthcare workers to "avoid isolated, poorly lit and sparsely populated areas" on the campus. The advisory was issued in the wake of murder and rape of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, Kolkata.
The development comes after Silchar Medical College & Hospital on Wednesday issued an advisory for female doctors, students and all healthcare workers urging them to avoid the isolated places, which created an uproar prompting the hospital management to roll back its notice. The advisory was cancelled following protests from students who demanded enhanced security measures in the hospital.
The advisory said female doctors, students, and staff should, as much as possible, avoid situations where they are alone.
SMCH's Principal cum Chief Superintendent Dr Bhaskar Gupta had issued the advisory, following the horrific crime at R G Kar Medical College in Kolkata.
"The advisory issued earlier stands cancelled and a new advisory will be issued soon in this regard," Gupta said.
CBI probe into Kolkata rape case amid nationwide protests
Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday started a probe into the rape and murder of a woman doctor following the Calcutta High Court's order to transfer the probe from the Kolkata Police to the central agency. A forensic team, along with CBI officials is set to visit the crime scene to investigate the horrific case which triggered a nationwide stir led by doctors across the nation. Several doctors continued their strikes in Delhi and other cities on Wednesday, urging the Central government to bring a law to protect medics.
