As Assam continues to grapple with floods, eight more people have lost their lives in the state on Sunday, an official bulletin said. Among the casualties, two each were reported from Dhubri and Nalbari districts while one each was reported from Cachar, Goalpara, Dhemaji and Sivsagar districts. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) bulletin said that with the latest fatalities, the death count in this year's flood, landslide and storms increased to 78.
According to ASDMA, 22,74,289 people in 28 districts were affected by the flood till Sunday. Moreover, the worst hit was Dhuri where 7,54,791 people were reportedly affected. To fight the natural disaster, a total of 269 relief camps were operating in the state which were providing shelter to 53,689 people. Additionally, the ASDMA stated that the Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger mark at Nematighat, Tezpur and Dhubri.
10 rivers flowing above red mark
Apart from Brahmaputra, other rivers that have breached the red mark are Burhidihing in Khowang, Dikhou in Sivsagar, DIsang in Nanglamuraghat, Dhansiri in Numaligarh, Kopili in Dharamtul, Beki in Barpeta, Sankosh in Golakganj, Barak in BP Ghat and Kushiyara in Karimganj. In its earlier bulletin, the ASDMA had informed about two casualties in Charaideo and one each in Goalpara, Morigaon, Sonitpur and Tinsukia districts.
CM Himanta visits relief camps
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited a relief camp in Kamrup, Palasbari district today. Meanwhile, he talked to the media and said that their focus is on finding a national solution to the floods unlike those who only want to declare it a national problem. He stated that in 2004 there were 400 embankment breaches while today there are only 4 such breaches.
Rahul Gandhi to visit Assam
Rahul Gandhi raised concern over flood-affected Assam. Taking to X, the Congress leader said, "The flood situation in Assam is becoming increasingly dangerous. My thoughts are with our brothers and sisters reeling under the deluge. Deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I appeal to Congress leaders and workers to provide help in rescue and rehabilitation operations," the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha said. "I urge the Central and state governments to compassionately and expeditiously extend all possible support to those affected," he added. He is scheduled to meet flood victims of Assam on Monday. He will arrive at the Kumbhigram airport in Silchar in Assam's Cachar district in the morning before departing to strife-torn Manipur.
