Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday, July 6, assured the Centre's full assistance to Assam in response to the devastating floods triggered primarily by heavy rain there.
In a statement released on Saturday, Shah, who held conversation with state Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, said that the NDRF and the SDRF are working on a war footing to rescue and provide relief to the affected people.
He stated, "Due to the heavy rains, a flood-like situation has emerged in Assam. I spoke with Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma about the ongoing situation. The NDRF and the SDRF are working tirelessly, providing relief and rescuing the victims. PM Narendra Modi stands with the people of Assam and is committed to providing all possible assistance to the state in these challenging times."
Meanwhile, Assam has been grappling with floods, affecting over 24.5 lakh people in 30 districts, with major rivers flowing above the danger level at several locations.
The death toll in the state is grim, with over 52 lives lost so far and an additional 12 fatalities caused by landslides and storms. The catastrophic situation has also resulted in the loss of 114 wildlife in Kaziranga National Park.
Earlier, an official commented on the development, saying, “So far, we have rescued 95 animals, but the toll on wildlife is heartbreaking."
