The flood situation in Assam worsened on Sunday, with two more fatalities and over 262,000 people affected across 12 districts, according to an official bulletin. Five major rivers, including two stretches of the Brahmaputra, are flowing above the danger level.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal reviewed the dire situation in his constituency of Dibrugarh, where the district headquarters have been underwater for several days. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported two deaths in Dhemaji, raising this year's toll from floods, storms, and landslides to 44.
Currently, 262,186 people are affected by floods in Kamrup, Karimganj, Tinsukia, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Majuli, Cachar, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Sivsagar, Kokrajhar, and Jorhat districts. The flooding continues to impact 36 revenue circles and 671 villages, with Dhemaji being the worst-hit district, followed by Cachar and Tinsukia.
The rivers breaching danger levels include the Brahmaputra at Dibrugarh and Nematighat, the Dikhou in Sivsagar, the Jia Bharali in Sonitpur, the Beki in Barpeta, and the Kushiyara in Karimganj. About 2,593 displaced individuals are sheltering in 44 relief camps, while another eight relief distribution centers are operational. Floodwaters have submerged 6,546 hectares of crop area.
Rescue operations by the National Disaster Response Force, SDRF, fire services, and local administrations have rescued around 300 people in Dhemaji, 20 in Tinsukia, and three in Dibrugarh. Additionally, 1,050 animals were rescued by boat in Dhemaji. Infrastructure such as roads, bridges, embankments, and Anganwadi centers have been damaged across the state.
Urban areas in Kamrup and Dibrugarh districts are also severely affected, with 5,742 people impacted. Dibrugarh, the worst-hit, has 5,667 people affected, with three relief camps set up for 75 displaced individuals.
