The BJP-led alliance in Assam has claimed a resounding 5-0 victory in the state’s recent by-elections, with the most significant win coming from Samaguri. BJP candidate Diplu Ranjan Sarmah triumphed over Congress’s Tanzil Hussain, son of former Samaguri MLA and ex-minister Rakibul Hussain, by a margin of 26,200 votes. This victory ensured that the Hussain family's stronghold in Samaguri did not pass to its third generation, a highly anticipated result for BJP supporters who celebrated the outcome with great enthusiasm.
In the Behali by-election, BJP's Diganta Ghatowal secured a decisive win, defeating Congress's Jayanta Bora by more than 9,000 votes. Ghatowal garnered 50,861 votes, while Bora, who received 41,805 votes, was unable to bridge the gap despite a long vote-counting process. This victory adds to the growing momentum of the BJP-led alliance in the region.
In the Bongaigaon constituency, AGP’s Diptimoyee Choudhury, wife of the former eight-time MLA Phani Bhushan Choudhury, defeated Congress’s Brajenjit Singha by a significant margin of 34,499 votes. Choudhury’s victory marks a major win for the AGP, which remains a key partner in the ruling alliance.
The alliance also secured victories in Dholai and Sidli. BJP’s Nihar Ranjan Das emerged victorious in Dholai, defeating Congress's Dhrubajyoti Purkayastha by nearly 10,000 votes. In Sidli, BJP ally UPPL’s Nirmal Kumar Brahma triumphed over BPF’s Suddho Basumatary, completing the alliance’s clean sweep across all five constituencies.
This dominant performance by the BJP-led alliance in Assam's by-elections further strengthens the position of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and underscores the growing influence of the BJP in the state. The victories, especially in traditionally competitive regions like Samaguri, are seen as a testament to the alliance’s expanding reach and voter support.
The counting for the bypolls began at 8 am on November 23, 2024, and the victory in Behali is seen as a significant boost for the BJP in the state.
Notable transitions included BJP leaders Parimal Suklabaidya and Ranjit Dutta, who secured the Cachar and Tezpur Lok Sabha seats; AGP's Phani Bhushan Choudhury winning in Barpeta; and UPPL’s Joyanta Basumatary claiming the Kokrajhar seat.
After the polls, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Sarma took to X and wrote, "Your voice matters, and the choice you make will determine the course of your constituency's development in the coming days."
An overall polling percentage of 72.83 per cent was recorded across the five Legislative Assembly constituencies that went to the bye-elections in Assam.
