World's worst air disaster that killed 583 people in Canary Islands
New Delhi: On March 27, 1977 a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines collided with a Pan Am flight 1736 aircraft at Tenerife airport (earlier known as Los Rodeos Airport ) on the Spanish island of Tenerife,
Pan Am 1736 also burst into flames and broke into several pieces. Most of the survivors from that aircraft were seated forward of the wings.
The official inquiry laid the entire blame of this crash on van Zanten.
