St. Petersburg: Work has started on Russian Navy's latest landing vessel, Pyotr Morgunov, media reported.
The announcement was made Thursday by Kaliningrad's Yantar Shipyard, Xinhua reported.
Pyotr Morgunov is the second craft commissioned under a Russian Navy project, and follows Ivan Gren, which is due for completion by the end of 2015.
Under the terms of the construction contract for Pyotr Morgunov, the landing craft must be ready for delivery to the Russian Navy by 2018.
The large landing ships built under the auspices of Project 11711 will be able to carry up to 300 Marines, 36 armoured personnel carriers and 13 tanks as well as a Ka-29 helicopter.
