Bretigny-sur-Orge, France, Jul 13: A train carrying hundreds of passengers derailed and crashed into Bretigny-sur-Orge station outside Paris on Friday on one of the busiest days of the year for holiday getaways.At least six people were killed and dozens were injured, officials said.The Interior Ministry said some 192 people were either injured or being treated for shock - of which nine were in a critical condition.Some 300 firefighters, 20 medical teams and eight helicopters were deployed to the scene to get survivors out of the derailed train carriages lying on the rail tracks inside Bretigny station.Various victims wrapped in emergency foil blankets waited to be evacuated.Guillaume Pepy, President of SNCF (French national railways) said it was not possible to identify the cause of the derailment yet and there were three investigations under way."At this moment, it is not possible to know the causes of this catastrophe. It is too early. Experts are at the site to make a number of assessments. There are three investigations going on: one by the Justice department, another one by the Ministry of Transportation, and one by SNCF."One of the passengers of the derailed train described the accident as seen from his carriage."At some point the train started to take off a little bit and than we had the impression that we were rolling on the gravel. It was shocking, and then I saw the carriage in front of us starting to twist and bend on the side. In my carriage the windows broke - it was very shocking," said Clement, whose surname was not given.Other witnesses reported that the train was not moving at an excessive speed, deepening the mystery of what happened.The SNCF said the train was carrying about 385 passengers when it derailed on Friday evening at 17:15 pm local time (15:15 GMT) and crashed into the station at Bretigny-sur-Orge, about 20 kilometres (12 miles) south of Paris.The train was headed from Paris to Limoges, a 400-kilometre (250-mile) journey, and was about 20 minutes into the scheduled three-hour journey.Four of the seven train cars slid toward the station, crushing part of the metallic roof over the platform. According to the SNCF the train's third and fourth cars initially derailed, which then knocked the other cars off the track.The crash was the deadliest in France in several years.French President Francois Hollande rushed to the scene at the Bretigny-sur-Orge station Friday afternoon.The accident came as France was preparing to celebrate its most important national holiday, Bastille Day, on Sunday, and as masses of people were heading out of Paris and other big cities to see family or for summer holidays.Trains operations have been suspended in Bretigny-sur-Orge for the next three days.
