There are no indications of it erupting again in the near future. It was first discovered in 1974 and was fully explored and mapped out in 1991.Árni B. Stefánsson was the first to explore the vault and who has pleaded the case for making it accessible for years.Árni B. Stefánsson named it as ‘Three Peaks Crater'.In order to view it from inside travellers are lowered into the belly of the volcano using a cable lift that descends 120 metres from a four-by-four-metre opening in the summit. The magma chamber is often referred to as the heart of a volcano.Entry into the magma chamber of Thrihnukagigur is via a 13x13-foot (4x4-meter) opening. The chamber then drops down 394 feet (120 meters) below the surface. The crater itself is bottle shaped and its cave a whopping 5,300,000 cubic feet (150,000 cubic meters) in size.Last year, tours were only available during June and July.What is different about this volcano's beauty is that its last eruption left a rate geological legacy.Magma solidified on the walls inside, rather than cooling into hard lava on the outside, leaving bright colours and intricate patterns on its interior walls.Tours of the Thrihnukagigur crater cost 37,000 Icelandic kroner (£197).Trip to Thrihnukagigur volcano is a 45-minute trip that takes you to the past volcanic fields, gas tunnels and sculpted volcanic cones.
