Washington, Jun 13: Westinghouse Electric Co. says it has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Nuclear Power Company of India Ltd. aimed at the future construction of nuclear power plants in western India.
The announcement Wednesday came as the top diplomats of the U.S. and India met in Washington for an annual strategic dialogue.
The U.S.-based company said it would be negotiating an early works agreement that will include preliminary licensing and site development work for plants at the Mithivirdi site in Gujarat.
It said that represented significant progress toward the realization of a 2008 India-U.S. civil nuclear agreement, and was an important step toward keeping the Mithivirdi project moving forward.
U.S. suppliers have been unable to capitalize on the nuclear agreement because of the terms of an Indian liability law.
