UK General Election 2024 Highlights: Keir Starmer succeeds Sunak as next British PM

Exit polls had predicted a historic victory for the Keir Starmer-led Labour Party with 410 seats, while the Conservatives led by PM Rishi Sunak was expected to win only 131 seats. The Liberal Democrats are expected to win 61 seats and the far-right Reform UK is expected to take home 13 seats.

London: People throughout the United Kingdom voted 650 members of the House of Commons on July 4 for a term of up to five years. The party that commands a majority in the Commons, either alone or in coalition, will form the next government and its leader will be the prime minister. The Labour Party secured a thumping victory in Thursday's election by winning more than 410 seats, paving the way for party leader Keir Starmer to become the next British Prime Minister.

On the other hand, the Conservative Party led by Rishi Sunak suffered its worst defeat in the two-century history of the party, managing close to 121 seats amid voter apathy due to economic stagnation, housing shortages, creaking public services and high immigration. Sunak stepped down both as Prime Minister and the Tory leader after the humbling defeat, as several party heavyweights lost their parliamentary seats.

What do the exit polls predict?

According to the exit poll, which is often quite close to the final tally, Labour is heading for a historic victory by winning as many as 410 seats, comfortably crossing the half-way 326 mark and notching up a 170-seat majority with the incumbent Tories down to just 131 seats. The Liberal Democrats are projected to come third with 61 MPs, the far-right Reform UK could win 13 seats and the Scottish National Party (SNP) could take home 10.
